Summary

A story well told! Love Moehringer’s writing style。 I could visualize the haunts of this character as if I was there。

Mildly entertaining book。

Captivating novel based on the life of famous Brooklyn Irish bank-robber Willie who never killed anyone and escaped prison 3 times

I like to eat but I don't consider myself a foodie。 I have never watched a baking show or have ever read Gourmet magazine but I have to say that I really enjoyed this memoir, about Reichl's time as chief editor of Gourmet。 It is a good entertaining story and she writes very well。 She also includes a few recipes, along the way。 4。5 stars I like to eat but I don't consider myself a foodie。 I have never watched a baking show or have ever read Gourmet magazine but I have to say that I really enjoyed this memoir, about Reichl's time as chief editor of Gourmet。 It is a good entertaining story and she writes very well。 She also includes a few recipes, along the way。 4。5 stars 。。。more

I wanted to like this。I think I did until about the eighth time Willie flashed back and forth。 The ending was memorable, but not something i’d feel compelled to read again。

Entertaining。 Willie Sutton is likable, enterprising, and a romantic who made decisions based on love, circumstance, and need。 I chuckled a few times but was confused regarding his one great love which was real or imagined。。。

The author used a clever method for telling Willies story - - - Following Willies own marked map of all。 his misadventures。Thid book is a good read, and provocative。 "No honor among thieves" is NOT Willie! He was an anti-hero, folk hero, or jusb plain a bad guy with a following of admirers。 I enjoyed it very much The author used a clever method for telling Willies story - - - Following Willies own marked map of all。 his misadventures。Thid book is a good read, and provocative。 "No honor among thieves" is NOT Willie! This book read like someone in the shower composing dialogue for a film noir movie。 You know those conversations you dream up of what you wish you would have said and are completely unrealistic? Yeah that。 Way too many calling people "kid," "witty" statements, and rueful remarks。And this was so obviously written by a man。 The way he describes sex, the way women are charmed, and the ending was just gross。 I cringed through this。 Did he even get input from a woman? And finally, the real Willie Sutt This book read like someone in the shower composing dialogue for a film noir movie。 You know those conversations you dream up of what you wish you would have said and are completely unrealistic? Not my usual fare but I did enjoy reading this novel about Willie Sutton, the famous bank robber of the Depression era。 The story was uniquely told from both his personal perspective and those of a reporter and photographer who toured him around NYC on the day after his final release from prison。 The book portrayed an interesting character - nicely dressed and very well-read - whose life of crime was attributed to his first love。 Willie was an Irishman and a storyteller, which leaves us to wonde Not my usual fare but I did enjoy reading this novel about Willie Sutton, the famous bank robber of the Depression era。 The story was uniquely told from both his personal perspective and those of a reporter and photographer who toured him around NYC on the day after his final release from prison。 The book portrayed an interesting character - nicely dressed and very well-read - whose life of crime was attributed to his first love。 Willie was an Irishman and a storyteller, which leaves us to wonder what is true and what is fabricate。 。。。more

I picked this one up at a thrift store。 I had never heard of the book or the main character and wasn’t expecting much。 Willie’s story is told in parallel timelines, which were interwoven uniquely by place, and I loved it to the last page。

Sutton is based on a true story about a famous bank robber who winds up in jail after break out after break out。 The ending is a huge surprise。

This historical fiction story of Willie Sutton, the legendary bank robber, kept me reading late into the night。 Willie was born in 1901, graduated high school and tried to find a job during terrible economic times。 The conditions and culture of the time were of great interest to me since my dad was born in 1904 and lived on Long Island when Willie was in Brooklyn。 Willie, who never hurt anyone during the robberies, was so successful at robbing banks that he became a folk hero。Though captured and This historical fiction story of Willie Sutton, the legendary bank robber, kept me reading late into the night。 Willie was born in 1901, graduated high school and tried to find a job during terrible economic times。 The conditions and culture of the time were of great interest to me since my dad was born in 1904 and lived on Long Island when Willie was in Brooklyn。 Willie, who never hurt anyone during the robberies, was so successful at robbing banks that he became a folk hero。Though captured and jailed many times, he managed to escape - adding to the myth of Willie the Actor。 The author organizes Willie’s life by having Willie retell his story going from one scene to another chronologically with a reporter and photographer in 1969。 It was very well written。 It does leave you wondering if he really did it all for love? 。。。more

Pretty early on I was giving the book, Sutton, five stars。 I loved it。 The story earned all five, all the way through。。。and then, (view spoiler)[the conversation with Bess's relative。 It lost a star。 But I read the last few chapters laying in bed, fighting sleep。 Woke up bummed out; I thought maybe I missed something, because J。R。 Moehringer couldn't write a five star book, then in the last few pages let it tank to a four。 So, I read the last few chapters again, with fresh eyes and wide awake br Pretty early on I was giving the book, Sutton, five stars。 I loved it。 The story earned all five, all the way through。。。and then, (view spoiler)[the conversation with Bess's relative。 It lost a star。 But I read the last few chapters laying in bed, fighting sleep。 Woke up bummed out; I thought maybe I missed something, because J。R。 Moehringer couldn't write a five star book, then in the last few pages let it tank to a four。 So, I read the last few chapters again, with fresh eyes and wide awake brain。 This: (view spoiler)[Reporter doesn't know。 His current theory is, that Sutton lived three separate lives。 The one he remembered, the one he told people about, and the one that really happened。 Sutton was brilliantly human to the very end。 (hide spoiler)] (hide spoiler)] 。。。more

When you need something unlike everything else on the market, this is the book。 Gripping, fast-paced, real。 After reading this (and putting his other great book, The Tender Bar, on my permanent favorites list) I am convinced I would read anything Moehringer writes。

Makes ya want to go rob a bank! JK! Why can’t bank robbers just stop at one or two?? Jeez! Such greed。 They’re like politicians! Lol Anyway, I picked this book up at a used bookstore because of the title, Sutton (maiden name。 Kinfolk? Hmmm)。。。。 I enjoyed the story line Moehringer wrote to go with the infamous bank robber, Willie Sutton。 Very entertaining。 Try it! It’ll make ya want to go rob a bank!

Pat

Great book! Not just a nonfictional story about and robber Willie Sutton。 So many layers!Three separate lives: the one he remembered, the one he told people about, the one that really happened。

Marta Borruel

Susan White-Riggs

This is a good book, and it's at least the second time I have read it, don't know why it isn't on my "read" list。 But in any case, an interesting story, I like the characters, the writing is great。 This is a good book, and it's at least the second time I have read it, don't know why it isn't on my "read" list。 But in any case, an interesting story, I like the characters, the writing is great。 。。。more

The writing in this book seemed to be from another era and a very male one I did not finish as I got tired of the descriptions of women。

An interesting interpretation on the life of notorious bank robber, Willie Sutton。 It is always interesting reading the histories of criminals because it humanizes them in an expected way。 You learn their motivation and understand why they are the way they are。 You *almost* forgive them。
